Happy Friday!

Most students got back their grading sheets for their biography projects.

Some students also got back their end-of-selection tests.

Would you please remind your child to return Monday with their end-of-selection test.  It's the one with Skills in Context and Molly Pitcher.  I wish to go over a few sections with them.

Have a great weekend!

Language Arts
Not a regular routine this week.

Writing The first draft of their opinion writing was due today.  Some had it completed and some did not.  All should be ready with theirs tomorrow.

Annotating text.
Read two assigned passages and annotate both.

Annotating is a two-step strategy where a student reads a selection and...

1.numbers each paragraph
2.puts COMPREHENSIVE notes in the margin; these notes may be a dates, vocabulary, events, locations, story structure, summary, important information, etc.

all this is in an effort to be able to better understand the text, how it is put together into a whole, and focus on one or more related ideas.

Annotating makes answering questions about text easier also because of the time spent with and thinking about the text.

If you are a sewer or know someone who would enjoy volunteering their time to a worthy project, have them meet us at Karigon between the hours of 9 and 3:00 on Monday.  People usually bring their own sewing machines, but if not, we have some "extras" in the room that someone can sit at and sew.  All material is provided.  If you wish to get more information; let me know.

We have no school on Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday.

I will be at Karigon with about 40 other volunteers sewing quilts together.  Each student in Shatekon's third and fifth grader designed a square to be put in a quilt that will be given to people in need of comfort.

Writing:
Opinion writing your child has selected a topic and has written an opening. They are still in the formative stage.   Today they are/were to finish 3 strong reasons and support those ideas in their evidence sections of  the sheet. It currently should be filled in up to and through the "evidence" section.

Leveled readers: complete the Write About It task, located in the back of the reader.  This can be completed on a separate piece of paper or in their journals.  (They also received it on a sheet of paper, yet don't let them tell you they "forgot" the piece of paper...if they have the book, they have the assignment.)

Spelling: study
Vocabulary: study

Mrs. Ropitzky test corrections... Students can and are encouraged use their notebooks and books.

I wish to remind you that your child has opportunity to receive extra help during lunch periods from the fifth grade teachers.

I have heard that , since the Shenendehowa website has been re-imaged, that accessing the GoMath and Journeys material is different from before the break.   I understand that if you go to "Shatekon" it is along the left-hand side toward the bottom.
I have yet to access it myself because my log in is different than the "student" log in.

Have a great day!
